Last night I watched a sneak peak of the new Lifetime show "24-Hour Catwalk" that will be airing this Tuesday January 10th at 10/9c. Four designers compete against each other for a chance to create their own collection in 24 hours. The show features TV personality, writer, model, and fashion icon ,Alexa Chung as the host. The panel of judges include: Cynthia Rowley - Designer, James La Force - Media and Communications Consultant, Derek Blasberg - New York Times best-selling author and fashion editor and Alexa Chung.
All four of the designers compete during the first part of the show but only two make it to the winning catwalk. Each of the four designers are given an mystery trunk which contains an element of their style challenge. This time it was a 70's jumpsuit. The designers had two hours to transform the jumpsuit into a cocktail dress. Their final designs are presented on a dress form. Two were eliminated leaving the final two (Richard Lowe and Joann Bergman) to battle it out on the catwalk. Again the designers open their mystery trunk to reveal newspapers with images from the 60's, 70's, and 80's. The challenge was to create three looks inspired by the images in the newspaper. One of the looks had to include the actual newspaper. Each designer is given a sewing team of three people and 24 hours to create their looks. For the finale each designer sends their models down the runway to showcase their collection. Richard and JoAnn's collections had pieces that were inspired by each decade. Richard's looks were more commercial and wearable. His "just fabulous jacket" turned out to be not so. JoAnn's looks were quirky, colorful, and playful. And the winner is... JoAnn Berman. |

This fall designers pay homage to the best of beauty past. This season proves that the iconic styles and silhouettes of the yesterday can rival even the hottest looks of today. Looks from the 40’s, 60’s, and 70’s are recreated to appeal to the modern woman. I love fall and I love mixing retro pieces with my everyday basics and this perfect season to have a little fun.
Flashback to the 1940's when it was all about the dress. Structured or flowing, printed and tied with pussy bows, choose a great dress with a 40's vibe and wear it with a ladylike bag and a pair of ankle strap heels. Make room for ultra MOD looks from the 1960's. Simple sheath dresses in bold or blocked colors. Ankle length cigarette pants paired with flats with brightly colored lids and bold defined lashes. We still love the laid back look of 1970's Luxe, pair platform pumps or loafers with wide leg trousers, floppy felt hats, button up shirts with faux fur vests and maxi skirts.

What better a way to jump into the fall season than with a fresh new look? From drugstores to department stores, the beauty industry is flooded with products claiming to be the greatest, leaving consumers wondering which items are worth indulging in. Below, professional makeup artist, Jessica Lauren shares her product recommendations with Style Envy and explains which items will give you the best bang for your buck.
Splurge: Dior 5 Couleur Eye Shadow Using the right combination of the five colors, this shadow is ideal for any occasion: casual or formal, any time of the day. “The colors that come in the palate are rich and go on smooth, making it easy to create gorgeous eyes,” she says. Jessica recommends using a combination of the lighter tones with a hint of a darker shade to create a natural daytime look. She suggests accentuating the eyes for the evening by using darker shades to thicken the crease. “Although some eye shadows from drugstores can be bought for under $10, this investment is well worth it,” promises Jessica. Dior 5 Colour Eyeshadow - available at Bloomingdale's for $58
Save: Cover Girl Perfect Point Plus Eyeliner When it comes to eyeliner, consumers seek brands that provide easy application and long term staying power to last throughout the day, informs Jessica. “Unlike other high-end cosmetics, there is not too much of a difference between expensive eyeliners and more affordable ones. I find Cover Girl’s Perfect Point Plus Eyeliner to be one of my favorites as it stays in place all day and has a smudger on the opposite end of the point to create a great smokey look,” she says. Shop Cover Girl Perfect Point Plus Eyeliner is available at drugstore.com for $5.49 .
Splurge: Bobbi Brown Shimmer Wash Eye Shadows Sheer eye shadows, like this one, are a makeup bag-must-have! Their gentle radiance brightens the eyes but can also be used as an illuminator on the cheek bones to add pizzazz to any look. “Bobbi Brown’s Shimmer Wash shadows are ageless and compliment every woman’s look,” says Jessica. Bobbi Brown Shimmer Wash Eye Shadow is available at Nordstrom for $20.
Save: Maybelline Falsies Volume Mascara “My clients always ask for full lashes,” says Jessica. Rather than splurge for the expensive brands, she recommends using Maybelline Falsie Volume Mascara which is designed to give lashes fullness while fanning them out. “Even better than most brands on the market, this specific mascara also contains fiber enriched formulas to give the lashes extra length as if false lashes were applied,” she says. Maybelline Falsies Volume Express Mascara is available at Walgreens $7.99
Splurge: Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Unlike other tinted moisturizers, this product helps to control oil breakthrough while hydrating the skin where needed. “Its lightweight texture makes the skin appear super smooth and gives the skin a very natural look,” says Jessica. The product is safe for sensitive skin types and contains SPF 20 to keep the skin protected all year. Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer is available at Saks Fifth Avenue for $42.
Save: Maybelline Define-A-Brow Eyebrow Pencil “Filling in eyebrows leaves a more finished look and enhances the eyes,” says Jessica. When it comes to finding the perfect brow pencil, there’s no need to look any further than your local drugstore. Maybelline Define-A-Brow Eyebrow Pencil blends easily and has a convenient comb attachment for grooming. “Its waterproof formula allows for a long lasting finish that won’t need to be reapplied throughout the day,” says Jessica. Maybelline Define-A-Brow Eyebrow Pencil, is available at drugstore.com for $5.49.
Splurge: Giorgio Armani Face Fabric Radiance Using a good foundation is crucial, as all women want to be sure it will give them the coverage they need without clogging pores. “Face Fabric Radiance is a great cream to powder foundation with light reflecting properties that leave the skin sheer with a gorgeous glow,” says Jessica. She continues, “it doesn’t feel too heavy on the skin and offers a natural, matte look with causing dryness.” Giorgo Armani Face Fabric Radiance available at Saks Fifth Avenue for $48.

I'm always on the lookout for new designers and products I can share with my readers. The Hold Me Company is a fresh, new company that makes functional and stylish cosmetic bags wth a vintage twist. I'm the type of girl that saves all the free cosmetic bags I get from department store special offers. I have (had) about five cosmetic bags randomly filled with my lipsticks, glosses, mineral powders, foundation, eyeliners, mascaras, shadows, and brushes. Finding my go-to cosmetics in a timely manner has become a bit of a challenge. The Hold Me bag is what I needed all along. I emptied out all my bags and edited down to only what I thought would fit in the Hold Me bag. To my surprise -- it was much more than I expected. The bag has four large compartments and slots for lipsticks, pencils, beauty tools, pencils, and more. It's made out of a soft, sturdy, easy-to-clean, New Suede fabric, accented with
white stitching, and a tie closure inspired by a vintage bookbag. It's available in Classic Black, Vanity Dames, Miss Suki, and Les Fleurs.
About the Hold Me beauty bag:
"Hold Me is a little different. This bag is not the standard issue bright print, vinyl, see-through plastic, multi-multi-compartment cosmetic bag you may be using. Nor is it the one from the department store - a major cosmetic company's bag that fits their own specific products. It is not a day planner with pages for make-up. And honestly, would you miss the sound of crunch, crunch, and rip, Velcro when you open your cosmetic bag?
Think of your Hold Me Bag as the comparison between that gauzy, floral frock you bought that never quite fit, and your favorite classic black dress, the one you always reach for when you want to look your best.
After a lot of personal searching for that perfect fit, it took some time to develop the Hold Me Bag. The initial spark came from everyday lifestyle issues: many years living in a small beach cottage with one little bathroom; constantly packing for last-minute business travel; a promotion then a move, gaining a larger bathroom, but requiring more time at work so even less time in the morning to get out the door. So the quest for "that one bag" which would hold and organize cosmetics, brushes, and tools, keep everything at a glance, all the while saving time by streamlining the daily make-up routine, was on!
So.
It didn't seem like "that bag" was out there. Understanding the basic need for saving time and space and staying organized, the design went from pencil and graph paper to flat pattern, to needles and fabric, then almost two dozen prototypes and three times that many different fabrics before it "worked"! The day that the sample of Knew Suede fabric arrived the decision was made to move on to production. Hands-down, this fabric out-performed all of the other beauties that missed the mark.
The Knew Suede passed every test for easy cleaning regardless of the type of make-up it encountered. It was also the top crush-proof candidate and held its own for classic black appeal. All Hold Me Bags have a Black Knew Suede exterior with contrast stitching.
A note about the design and "the tie"-
The bag is fashioned with a wrap-a-round self-tie patterned after a vintage schoolgirl's book-bag. It was designed to be an efficient closure without the use of Velcro, metal, or magnets, that would accommodate varying degrees of depth, depending upon the number and shapes of your enclosed items. The center section, "heart", of the bag can hold various palettes that can easily be used while they are open. The center section has a separate liner in the bottom, easily removable for cleaning, and for use outside the bag if needed. The brush/tool section has fifteen compartments; some will hold single items and some, multiple items"
